Hey! i thought that was against the law!. that was the thought of a couple of us old z'ers over lunch the other day. we were talking about the gps and dvd screens sitting in the dash boards of many of the new cars. we both recalled that tv's were banned, where the driver could see them, years ago. so, how are the manufacturers getting away with this? when also fails, go to the "bible" of the laws that govern all of us while were a proud owner of a motor vehicle, the state of california vehicle code book w over a 1000 pages with all the laws and that doesn't count the 500 or so more pages for the appendix and penal, insurance, government, education, civil, public utilities, health & safety, harbors & navigation, revenue & taxation, welfare & institutions codes and the list of violations and, finally, the index! give me a break! and you wondered where your car tax money goes. but, back to the subject is legal to have the gps and dvd screens up front! seems there's a loophole in the law that was written a very long time ago and was last amended in 1980. here it is. div.12 - 27602 - "no person shall drive a motor vehicle which is equipped with a television receiver , screen, or other means of visually receiving a television broadcast which is located in the motor vehicle at any point forward of the back of the driver's seat, or which is visible to the driver while operating the motor vehicle." did you catch it? ."receiving a television broadcast." gps images and dvd movies are not "television broadcasts." these technologies were not yet invented when the law was written, so go for it if you're so inclined. but, you'd better hurry. the word is out that a new law is in the works to shoot down, at least, your dvd player. seems there's still some argu-ments regarding the gps units. oh well, as they say, it was fun while it lasted. you're going to have to watch the dvds in the back of your other car. the one with the back seats. the ol' retired camel.
