Situation awareness and hence relevant to naturalistic decision making and to perception in general, see knill & richards, 1996 ; , even if decision makers and decision scientists ; do not consciously and explicitly ; see it as such. sequential procedure the friend foe problem is slightly different from the king queen problem because both p1 and p2 are conditional probabilities likelihoods ; . that is, using f to denote "foe" and using fn to denote "source n reports foe" where n 1 or the two likelihoods p1 p f1|f ; and p2 p f2|f ; are given by the success rate of source 1 and source 2 in correctly reporting foe. the friend foe problem is more complex than the king queen problem because bayes rule must be applied twice. starting with a noninformative prior p0 p f ; 50% and using the likelihood p1 p f1|f ; 80%, the first application of bayes rule yields the following result: p f|f1 ; p f ; * p f1|f ; [p f ; * p f1|f ; + 1-p f * 1-p f1|f ] 80% notice that the posterior p f|f1 ; 80% has the same value as the likelihood p f1|f ; 80%, i.e., because the prior p f ; 50%. the posterior p f|f1 ; 80% then becomes the prior for a second application of bayes rule. since the second source is independent of the first source as stated in the friend foe problem ; , the likelihood can be written as p f2|f, f1 ; p f2|f ; 67%. then, using p f|f1 ; 80% as the prior and p f2|f, f1 ; 67% as the likelihood, the second application of bayes rule yields the new posterior p f|f2, f1 ; 89%. [note that the same result would be obtained if the likelihoods were used in reverse order, i.e., first 67% then 80%]. additional data p f3|f, f2, f1 ; from a third, etc. source can then be used in the same way to further update p f|f2, f1 ; and compute p f|f3, f2, f1 ; , etc. 7.

In march 2006, the north carolina lottery sold its first ticket. lottery enactment had been a controversial issue in the state for 20 years. north carolina's road to lottery enactment was longer, more contentious, and more partisan than many states' and highlights some of the concerns people have long had about lotteries. as in other southern states, there was considerable opposition to lotteries, but worries about "losing" money to nearby states prompted north carolina's neighbors to succumb. when south carolina and tennessee gave in, north carolina was completely surrounded by lotteries and the only state on the east coast without one. a recession in 2001 nudged the state even closer to lottery enactment. north carolina's governor was an outspoken supporter of a lottery to fund education, and he even included a projected 5 million in lottery revenue in the state's fy 2006 budget before the lottery legislation had been approved. the legislature had long been divided, mainly along partisan lines. north carolina democrats largely supported the lottery, while the state republican party platform states, "a state lottery . places the burden of taxation most heavily on those who are least able to afford it." approval of the fy 2006 budget was delayed over a month into the fiscal year, in part because of debate over the proposed lottery. finally, in august, when it looked as if the bill were dead for the year, the senate passed it with a tie vote that was broken by the lieutenant governor. the house had passed the bill in april in a very close vote. the state then spent more than million to set up a and video poker game.

It takes to get a publication. pursuit of statistical significance has become the tail that wags the dog. i once was outside reviewer on a dissertation from a canadian university, a rather interesting-sounding study of autonomic responses of psychopaths, neurotic offenders, and normals. i found it impossible to determine how the study came out, however, because there were 75 pages of anova tables, 4th order interactions, some of them "significant" and discussed at wearying length. i suggested that the candidate should be passed since he clearly had been taught to do this by his faculty but that perhaps some of the faculty ought to be defrocked. 1 ; the null hypothesis is almost ; always f&e a professor at northwestern spent most of i%7 flipping a coin 300, 000 times, finding 50.2% heads, significant at the .ol level. at about the same time, meehl and i did our unpublished `crud factor" study. we had available from the university's student counseling bureau computerized responses to an "after high school, what?" questionnaire that had been administered to 57, 000 minnesota high-school seniors. we cross-tabulated all possible pairs of 15 categorical variables on this questionnaire and computed chi-square values. all 105 chisquares w-significant and 96% of them at p less than 10". thus, we found that a majority of episcopalians "like school" while only a minority of lutherans do 52% vs. 45% ; . fewer alc lutherans than missouri synod lutherans play a musical instrument. episcopalian high-school students are more likely to be male than is the case for baptists. fourteen of the 18 scales of the california psychological inventory cpi ; were developed empirically, by selecting items which differentiated various criterion groups gough, 1987 ; . there is no general factor that runs through all of these. scales or any substantive theory that predicts them all to be interrelated. yet the mean of the absolute values of the 144 intercorrelations is about .4. in psychology, everything is likely to be related at least a little bit to everything else, for complex and uninteresting reasons. therefore, any investigator who makes a directional prediction a is positively correlated with b, group x has more z than group y does ; has a 50: chance of confirming it just by gathering enough n-no matter how fatuous or lunatic his her theory might be meehl, 1%7 ; . bill oakes i 975 ; has pointed out that this may not be as serious a problem for genuinely experimental designs in which groups are truly randomly assigned to treatment and control conditions. in correlational designs e.g., anxiety vs. anality ; or in comparisons between self-selected groups e.g., normals vs. schizophrenics ; , one is asking if one variable is related to some other preexisting variable and, for psychology, the answer seems always to be "yes; at least a little bit, although perhaps not for the reason you think." in a true.experiment with random assignment, one is asking whether one's experimental treatment affects most of the experimental group with respect to the measured dependent variable and carribean poker or poker table felt.
Activity 5: agree disagree place 4 signs around the room that say: strongly agree, agree, disagree, and strongly disagree. have students individually record their opinion to controversial environmental statements. next, present each controversial environmental statement one at a time to the class and have students stand by the sign with which they agree. discuss these statements in small groups or as a class. let students select the environmental statement with which they feel strongly and write an opinion piece about their belief. students should be penalized for throwing away their lunch food jobs are more important than the environment science and technology can develop solutions to meet the needs of a growing population and to protect the environment a law should be made that households must separate garbage from recyclables habitats of endangered species should be preserved there should be greater promotion and more advertising for public transportation students should take the bus, walk, or bike to school.
A miraculous liking for the right things. he likes to eat properly without making a mess and he likes to sit on his pot alone in the bathroom. one day we decided he should sit on the pot. tommy wasn't ready and said so. we undertook to force him. he's strong as a mule and would not bend his knees and finally pulled us over on him. you never heard such a rumpus, and we haven't forced him to use that pot yet. shortly after that we took off his pants and he went inside to sit nicely as you please. the only real watson trait i can discern in the young man is that forever pointing of his left hand. this is rather unusual as you know, and he has it in all his pictures. we think tommy's terribly smart because he picks out daddy, edzie, and harry from old snaps. he raves over you and the horse. we took him for a haircut yesterday. you should have seen him, so mannish looking and so proud of himself. miss colgan is the only champion i have for tommy's looks. she insists he's exactly like me. he refuses to call me anything but georgia mama and i think that's cute, don't you? now i want you to come and stay long enough to observe tommy. he has changed so completely i hardly know the child. he seems subdued, quiet, never speaks to any of us. he grabs my hand and never lets go, but never speaks. he just sits and looks pensive. there is something pitifully unchildlike in tommy's manner. the most noteworthy event, despite almost continual coughing, was seeing the circus unload. we watched wagon after wagon hauled by teams of eight bring the paraphernalia. tommy nearly had a fit. called all the animals "horses, " including the fifteen elephants. the entrance was of course dirt and the teams stuck there and had to be pulled out by a double team. old tommy soon caught on and was screaming "git up horses! whoa horses! back, back, back up horses!" every time we mentioned going home he'd say, "no, no; kank you" which means no, i thank you. when he saw the shetland ponies he beamed and waved his arms at the nice horses. they try to get him on his sand pile barefooted, but they say he is too funny. he stands like a crane, first one foot down, then the other, moaning and groaning all the while for shoes. he must be mighty tender if his big feet can't stand a bit of sand. do you remember how he'd sit in a reflective mood with chin cupped in hand while he looked at books? well, they say when they urge him to eat, he puts his elbows in his tray, rests his chin in his hand, very patiently but decisively and repeats, "no, no, kank you." till he wears them out and poker rule.

Agile software development: the cooperative game benefit from thorough thinking, going through the requirements and the interfaces one line at a time, looking for mistakes. marketing people benefit from strong imaginations and people skills, and dealing with the constant shifts the market and the programmers ; throw them. all these value systems are needed to deliver the best resultant value, and they often clash with each other. consider: programmers have a reputation of being antisocial. what they really detest is going to meetings. however, software is a complex matter of tying together different threads of thought. the designer or programmer spends a great deal of time lifting a set of ideas up, holding them together in her head. she starts typing, holding in her head this tangled construct, tracing the mental links as she types. if you call a meeting at this point, the whole structure falls to the ground, and she must rebuild it after the meeting. it can easily take 20 minutes to get into this structure, and an hour to make progress. therefore, any phone call, discussion, or meeting, distracting her for longer than a few minutes, causes her to lose up to an hour of work and an immense amount of energy. is it any wonder programmers hate meetings? anti-social behavior, meeting-avoidance in particular, is a protective part of their profession. however, not all values are constructive. a locally constructive but globally destructive one is the invent-here imperative "don't use someone else's design" ; . imagine for a moment, you hired some people who got a degree in programming and program design. what will they want to do for you? program! that is what they are trained at, what they were hired for. they get promoted to senior programmers by programming, by making a name for themselves in their unique way of.

The game industry has awakened to the possibilities of academic research. international game developers association 2003 ; lists game programming among the eight core topics of game-related academic research. game programming is defined to cover "[a]spects of traditional computer science modified to address the technical aspects of gaming". this interest in novel solutions and improved methods is understandable, because the marketing of computer games is highly technology-driven. earlier the selling points were the amount of colours and real-timeliness, then the amount of polygons and the frame update frequency, and now the amount of simultaneous players in a networked game and the realism of the simulation. these features also reflect what programming problems have been in focus of game developers at the time. although one might think that computer games are favourable environments for artificial intelligence ai ; or simulation related research, co-operation between academic researchers and game developers has been most lively in graphics programming. in particular for the past two decades the siggraph community has been the forum where problems and solution methods are exchanged to and fro. theoretical methods have found their application and eventually ended up as part of the hardware e.g. in 3d display cards ; . in recent years the spread of broadband network connections and the growth of their capacity have geared interest towards problems of distributed multiplayer games smed, kaukoranta & hakonen 2002 ; . because computer games are real-time applications, the effect of communication delays are compensated using algorithmic prediction methods, which were originally developed in virtual environment research. another active field of research is cheating prevention, because the money involved in online gaming is arousing even criminal interest. new methods against virtual attacks are currently being developed, which aim at preventing spying and altering the game data transmitted over a network. ai related game problems have only recently returned to the focus of academic research laird & van lent 2001 ; . whereas traditional methods mainly concentrate on turn-based and discrete games, the interest is now in developing real-time methods, which seem to act.

The debate over internet gambling has intensified in canada as government, addictions agencies, and provincially regulated gambling industries expect substantial growth in online gaming. this issue deserves consideration given the rate of internet expansion, coupled with a growing concern over canadian gambling in general. unlike the larger universe of gaming which is legal and regulated ; , it is illegal to run online casinos in canada. this matter has become controversial due to the current canadian gambling policy under the control of provincial and territorial governments ; , the difficulty in regulating internet gambling, and the concern over the exacerbation of problem gambling. current empirical evidence suggests that canadian participation in online gambling is relatively low. however, it is substantiated that offshore internet gambling sites take millions of dollars in bets from canadian citizens kelly, todosichuk, & azmier, 2001 ; . the loss of government revenues to international companies, compounded by the possibility of land-based casinos forfeiting profit to online gaming, is a concern. proponents of prohibition argue that the potential cost to society will outweigh the possible economic benefits reaped by legalization. alternatively, those in favor of legalized internet gambling contend that regulation would permit government agencies to monitor the sites for the protection of the customer. regulation would allow for checks into the provider to guarantee that sites are legitimate and fair, would help ensure that underage gamblers are not permitted to wager money, and would offer various safeguards for problem gamblers. moreover, they argue that internet technology renders prohibition futile. this report reviews current literature on internet gambling, examines the arguments put forth by both sides of the issue, and reviews the approaches that other countries are taking. it is recommended that additional empirical research be conducted before any final legislative decisions are made.
This expectation may be based on having an unusually strong hand beaten by an even stronger one, or by having an opposing player make an extremely unlikely draw.

It was probably one of these tweedy old gentlemen who first came up with the witty comparison between the poet's private life and the living arrangements of the short-haired, brogue-wearing spinsters he encountered in the library. the term `lesbian' did not originally mean homosexual, but `native of the island of lesbos', and only those in the know would be able to make the connection between this and the more salacious aspects of sappho's biography. thus, it might be said, we began life as something of a literary in-joke. lesbianism in literature can be a tricky thing to put your finger on. many famous `lesbian' texts don't contain the word itself, and a large proportion of their authors would be shocked to see how later generations have pigeonholed their work. however, those who read and criticise them are all-too-eager to jump in with labels, making lesbianism not so much the love that dare not, as the love that need not speak its name. according to tracey chapman, "there is fiction in the space between" texts most susceptible to a lesbian interpretation are those that contain gaps, ellipses and lacunae, into which all manner of fantasies, conjectures and hopes can be inserted. sappho's poems are known for their fragmentary nature in most cases only a few lines survive, so scholars and translators are obliged to predict, or effectively to imagine what might have come in between. we don't know that sappho was gay, but there are ways of filling in the spaces in her poems to prove that she was. radclyffe hall was far more blatant very little can be read into ellipses such as "the moment passed and they drew together." other than what's going through your head right now. the word `lesbian' never occurs in the well of loneliness, but our modern minds find an opportunity to slot it in every other page, and hall never bothered to conceal what she was talking about. urdu writer ismat chughtai, on the other hand, took advantage of other people's dirty minds when she won her obscenity trial in 1941, claiming that her short story the quilt could not corrupt anyone, since it would only be understood by those who had already had a lesbian experience. the story is quite obviously about lesbians it is told from the perspective of a small girl, sharing a room with two women, and terrified by the strange sucking and lapping noises coming from underneath their quilt. despite her self-righteous defence, chughtai knew exactly what she was doing, and retained her innocence by relying on her readers' imagination to do the legwork. is there such a thing as lesbian literature? from here it looks like it's all in our heads.
